Spider veins or telangiectasis are very tiny, mostly harmless, unsightly, shallow red, blue or purple veins that typically occur on the skin of the legs. Most women will develop spider veins, particularly after pregnancy or after gaining weight. They tend to run in families.”

Sclerotherapy is a procedure designed to decrease the number and appearance of spider veins and is used for cosmetic reasons. Sclerotherapy is not generally done for larger varicose veins and does not usually help with leg pain associated with varicose veins.
HOW DOES IT WORK?
A sclerosing (irritating) solution is injected into the vein through a very small needle. The injection causes inflammation in the vein and it scars closed. Over a period of several weeks the vein will then fade. We use a FDA approved solution called Sotradecol (Sodium STS) or Polidocanol (Asclera). These solutions are mild and usually well tolerated.
DOES SCLEROTHERAPY WORK FOR EVERYONE?
Almost all people will have some improvement, but there can be no guarantee that sclerotherapy will be effective in every case. There are some things you can do to help improve the result: wear compression stockings after treatment, exercise, and lose that extra weight. The sclerotherapy does not work well for the large varicose veins ( greater than 3-4 mm.). Ultrasound evaluation of the venous system done at Hill Country Vein Center can help predict long term success.
HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE?
Each session will last 30-45 minutes. Typically it will take 3-4 sessions for the average person, depending on the number of spider veins. These sessions are usually spaced about 4 weeks apart, to allow for maximal improvement before repeating the procedure.
WHAT ARE THE SIDE EFFECTS?
Temporary bruising, discoloration or light brown streaking that usually improve over weeks and months. Rarely skin breakdown or blood accumulation under the skin occurs.
WHAT ARE THE ALTERNATIVES TO TREAT SPIDER VEINS?
Transdermal laser or filtered lamp therapies can be utilized. Usually they are best in the treatment of very superficial , smaller purple spider veins.
WHAT IS THE COST?
We charge $250 per individual session at Hill Country Vein Center. Most insurance companies do not cover these cosmetic procedures. Payment is collected prior to visits and may be made in cash, major credit cards or checks. While we strive to make sure every patient has a successful result, satisfaction cannot be guaranteed and there are no refunds after the procedure is completed.
